Backdraft (1991) is an American action thriller film directed by Ron Howard and written by Gregory Widen. The story follows two brothers in the Chicago Fire Department’s Engine 17 unit. Lt. Stephen ‘Bull’ McCaffrey, the elder brother, is a seasoned firefighter while Brian has previously struggled to live up to his brother’s legacy. After trying his hand at multiple careers, Brian returns to firefighting, although Stephen has reservations about his abilities. In 1971, Brian witnessed the death of their father Captain Dennis McCaffrey during a call, which deeply affected him. Another longtime member of Engine 17, John “Axe” Adcox, who worked with the boys’ father and acted as a mentor to them after he passed away, becomes concerned about Stephen’s risky methods and lack of adherence to safety protocols. This also worries Stephen’s wife Helen, who separated from him in an effort to protect herself and their son Sean from potential danger.

Inspector Donald ‘Shadow’ Rimgale, a dedicated arson investigator and veteran firefighter, is called in to investigate recent explosive fires that bear similarities to those set by pyromaniac Ronald Bartel. Brian becomes Rimgale’s assistant after a disagreement with Stephen. Rimgale uses Bartel’s fascination with fire to discredit his attempts at parole. As the investigation progresses, it is revealed that Chicago City Council alderman Marty Swayzak has been involved in budget cuts for the fire department. The alderman has accepted bribes from contractors looking to convert firehouses into community centers and secure construction contracts. Meanwhile, Brian reconnects with Jennifer Vaitkus, an aide to Swayzak.
