Bad Influence (1990)
Bad Influence (1990) is an American psychological thriller film directed by Curtis Hanson. A man leaves a naked woman sleeping as he disappears into the city, tossing away items to cover his tracks. Michael Boll, a shy, socially awkward doormat, discovers that important work data has gone missing. He suspects Patterson, his deceitful coworker, but lacks evidence and the courage to confront him. Frustrated, he retreats to his office where he is interrupted by his fiancée Ruth, whose incessant wedding planning adds to Michael’s stress. Seeking solace at a beach bar, Michael buys a drink for a wallet-less woman and soon faces violence from her aggressive boyfriend. However, the mysterious man from earlier steps in, using a broken beer bottle to frighten off the attacker before vanishing again when Michael tries to thank him.
At home, Michael’s older brother Pismo frequently borrows money, which he attributes to his past drug conviction preventing him from finding employment. One night, while on a jog, Michael encounters the enigmatic man he met at the bar – Alex. They grab drinks together and Alex shares his desire to outsmart Patterson. At work, Michael successfully carries out Alex’s plan by using the same tactics that Patterson used against him to obtain his data back. The rush of this victory leaves Michael feeling invigorated. In a short period of time, Alex introduces Michael to a lifestyle filled with pleasure-seeking, aggression, and defiance of rules. He even goes as far as showing Ruth a video of Michael engaging in sexual activity with his friend Claire in order to break off an engagement that Michael had expressed disinterest in.
