Directed by Abel Ferrara, Bad Lieutenant (1992) is an American neo-noir crime film that follows an unnamed NYPD police lieutenant portrayed by Harvey Keitel. The story begins with the lieutenant dropping off his two sons at Catholic school before indulging in cocaine and driving to Union Square where he discovers a double homicide. In exchange for drugs from the crime scene, the lieutenant gives a bag of drugs to a dealer, smoking crack during the transaction. He then proceeds to get drunk and participate in a threesome with two women at an apartment before visiting a red-haired woman to smoke heroin. At the same time, two young hoodlums rape a nun inside a church. The next day, the lieutenant learns of his loss in a bet on a National League Championship Series game between the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Later, the Lieutenant makes a visit to a dealer who owes him money and takes some of his cocaine as temporary payment. Later that evening, he heads to a different apartment where he indulges in more drugs. The next stop on his journey is a liquor store, where an officer from the same precinct is mediating a disagreement between the store’s owner and two young black men accused of stealing money. The Lieutenant directs the officer to bring the owner back to the station for documentation. Once alone, he demands that the young men return the stolen funds, which he then pockets before allowing them to leave without arrest. After this incident, he pays a visit to Zoe, another woman with whom he consumes heroin through smoking. Meanwhile, at a Catholic church in Spanish Harlem, the Lieutenant makes disparaging remarks about their involvement in a crime despite identifying as Catholic himself.
