Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)

Drew Goddard wrote, directed, and produced Bad Times at the El Royale (2018), an American neo-noir thriller with multiple intertwining plotlines. The once-popular hotel, situated on the border of California and Nevada, lost its gambling license and is now managed solely by heroin addict Miles Miller. It was in this same hotel in 1959 that Felix O’Kelly met his demise after hiding a bag of money under the floorboards of his room. Ten years later, four new guests arrive: Catholic priest Daniel Flynn, singer Darlene Sweet, salesman Laramie Seymour Sullivan, and hippie Emily Summerspring. As they check into their separate rooms, Laramie discovers wiretaps in the honeymoon suite and a secret corridor where every room can be observed through one-way mirrors and filmed with a camera. Through these devices, he sees Darlene singing, Daniel removing floorboards in his room, and Emily holding a young woman captive.
In the parking lot, Laramie makes a call to the FBI, revealing that he is actually Special Agent Dwight Broadbeck. Per J. Edgar Hoover’s orders, Dwight must focus on retrieving the surveillance materials planted by the FBI and disregard the ‘kidnapping’ incident. However, he is also instructed to prevent any guests from leaving. In order to do so, Dwight disables their cars. Later on, Daniel asks Darlene to join him for dinner at the hotel lounge where she reveals her upcoming performance in Reno and Daniel confesses his deteriorating memory. While Daniel goes to get drinks, Darlene notices him spiking her beverage and knocks him unconscious with a bottle. After some time, Miles discovers and revives Daniel but when he suggests making a confession, Daniel refuses.
