Stephen King’s Bag of Bones (2011) is a chilling American horror television miniseries based on his 1998 novel. Directed by Mick Garris and written by Matt Venne, it follows the story of best-selling author Mike Noonan and his wife, Jo. The couple struggles with fertility issues, as Mike reveals his low sperm count to be the cause. Tragedy strikes when Jo is fatally hit by a bus while crossing the street. In her final moments, Mike notices she had purchased a pregnancy test, leading him to suspect infidelity. His grief overwhelms him and he experiences writer’s block. Tormented by nightmares of their summer home in Maine’s Dark Score Lake, Mike takes a trip there upon the advice of his brother Sid. It is here that he meets a young widow named Mattie Devore and her daughter Kyra, who he becomes close with despite her estranged father-in-law Max Devore’s disapproval.

Despite the custody battle caused by Mattie shooting Lance, Mike finds solace in writing again. However, he begins to experience visions and nightmares that make him feel like he is not alone. Surprisingly, he realizes that his deceased wife’s spirit is present with him. In addition, he starts hearing the music of 1930s singer Sara Tidwell, whose ghost visits him in his dreams reliving her final moments before her tragic death in 1939. During his stay at the lake, Mike learns about ‘Dark Score Crazy’, a mysterious madness that drove some men in the town to drown their own daughters. In a shocking turn of events, Max and his assistant attack Mike while he is in the lake. Afterwards, Max makes an intriguing offer – if Mike agrees to leave them alone and not press charges, then the custody battle for Kyra will end.
