Ballers (2015–2019) is an American sports comedy drama series created by Stephen Levinson and starring Dwayne Johnson as Spencer Strasmore. The show follows Spencer, a retired NFL player who has taken on a new career as a financial manager for other players. Premiering on HBO in 2015 with a pilot written by Levinson and directed by Peter Berg, the fifth and final season aired in 2019. As the former all-pro player struggles with memories from his past, he starts each day with pain medication. Alongside his friends Ricky and Charles, Spencer attends their former teammate Rodney’s funeral after he died in a car accident with his unstable girlfriend. At the service, Rodney’s widow Tina urges Spencer to get his life together to avoid the same fate. Meeting with his partner Joe at Anderson Financial, Spencer learns the importance of ‘monetizing friendships’ in his role of providing access to star athletes.

That evening at Story, Rodney’s go-to club, Spencer imparts some valuable advice to his prospective clients – NFL players DeSean Jackson and Antonio Brown: ‘Always avoid buying a depreciating asset’. Meanwhile inside the club, Ricky meets Dashi, a talented young woman. While they engage in intimate activities on the bathroom floor, a former frat boy attempts to disrupt them and is quickly dealt with by Ricky. Spencer intervenes and takes charge, instructing Charles to get the truck ready. In an effort to spin the situation in his favor, Ricky reaches out to his agent Jason, but it’s too late as the news has already spread. Feeling regretful, he apologizes to his team’s management but is ultimately let go. Spencer sets him straight with a stern reminder to ‘wise up’. Despite not being an agent, Spencer takes matters into his own hands and contacts Miami GM Larry Siefert to suggest hiring Ricky. Meanwhile, Charles’ wife Julie urges him to seek employment. He lands a job at a local Chevy dealership. On Charles’ first day of work, Siefert pays him a visit and asks about Ricky. Charles speaks highly of his friend without hesitation.
