Bananas (1971)
Woody Allen’s Bananas (1971) follows the story of Fielding Mellish, a neurotic blue-collar worker. His attempts to impress social activist Nancy lead him to the fictional ‘banana republic’ of San Marcos, which is undergoing a coup d’état led by Gen. Emilio Molina Vargas. Despite his efforts to show compassion for the local people, Mellish becomes entangled in the political turmoil when Vargas orders his own men to kill him as part of a plan to gain financial aid from the U.S. Although Mellish narrowly escapes these assassination attempts, he is eventually captured by the real rebels and declared dead by Vargas. Faced with no other option, Mellish reluctantly joins forces with the rebels for two months.
After Mellish successfully participates in the revolution, he is chosen as the new president by the rebels due to Esposito’s descent into madness. When traveling back to the U.S. to secure financial support, Mellish is recognized by Nancy and his disguise is revealed. In court, he faces multiple incriminating witnesses, including a former Miss America and a middle-aged woman claiming to be disguised as J. Edgar Hoover. Despite one witness providing favorable testimony, the court clerk reads it back in a negative light. Eventually, Mellish is given a suspended prison sentence on the condition that he does not live near the judge’s neighborhood. To make matters worse, Nancy agrees to marry him.
