Bandits (2001)
Bandits (2001), directed by Barry Levinson and written by Harley Peyton, is an American crime comedy-drama film. Two friends and convicts, Joe and Terry, escape from Oregon State Penitentiary in a concrete mixing truck to embark on a bank robbing spree in pursuit of their shared dream. They become notorious as the ‘Sleepover Bandits’ due to their unique approach: they abduct the bank manager the night before the heist and spend the evening with their victim’s family. The next morning, they accompany the manager to the bank to retrieve their stolen funds. With Harvey Pollard, a not-so-bright aspiring stuntman, serving as their getaway driver and lookout, the trio successfully carries out multiple robberies, earning them a spot on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list and increasing the reward for their capture to $1 million.
When Kate, a disillusioned housewife, decides to flee her unhappy marriage, she falls into the clutches of criminals. Initially drawn to Joe, she soon becomes involved with Terry as well, creating a complicated love triangle. Together, the trio commits several robberies before their relationships start to unravel and Kate chooses to leave them behind. The two men then hatch one final heist plan. The story is recounted through flashbacks, interspersed with an interview for the fictional reality television show Criminals at Large where they insist that Kate was not a willing accomplice but merely a hostage.
