Barbie (2023)
Barbie (2023) is a fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. The story takes place in Barbieland, a matriarchal society where different versions of Barbies and Kens reside. However, there are also some discontinued models who are treated as outcasts due to their unconventional traits. While the Kens spend their days at the beach, it is considered their profession, while the Barbies hold prestigious jobs in various fields such as science, politics, and media. Ken, commonly known as Beach Ken (‘Ken’), has eyes only for Barbie and seeks a closer relationship with her. However, she focuses on other activities and female friendships instead. Things take an unexpected turn when Barbie suddenly starts worrying about mortality during a dance party one evening. Overnight, she experiences changes like bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet which disrupt her usual routines and shatter the classic perfection of the Barbies the next day.
Weird Barbie, a disfigured doll, directs her to find the child playing with her in the real world to cure her afflictions. Ken sneaks along in her convertible without permission, and Barbie reluctantly agrees to bring him. When they reach Venice Beach, Barbie uses force against a man who sexually harasses her, resulting in a brief arrest for both her and Ken. The duo’s presence does not go unnoticed, and Mattel’s CEO orders their recapture. After locating her owner Sasha, a teenager who scolds her for promoting unattainable beauty standards, Barbie feels shattered. What she discovers is that Gloria, Sasha’s mother and an employee at Mattel, triggered this crisis by playing with Sasha’s old Barbie toys. In an attempt to remake Barbie into something more marketable, Mattel tries to confine her in a toy box. With the help of Gloria and Sasha, she escapes and heads to Barbieland while being chased by Mattel executives.
