Barefoot (2005)
Barefoot (2005) is a romantic comedy film by German actor and director Til Schweiger. The protagonist, Nick Keller, leads a chaotic life, constantly moving from one temporary job to the next. He also faces challenges with his wealthy stepfather, Heinrich, and his brother Viktor. When he is abruptly let go from his role as a cleaner in a psychiatric clinic, he meets Leila, a patient who was about to end her life before Nick intervened. However, Leila’s background is just as tumultuous – she spent the first nineteen years of her life isolated at home under her mother’s control. After her mother’s death, she was hospitalized but longs to leave. Despite her age, Leila remains emotionally immature.
For instance, she takes everything literally and doesn’t like physical contact with strangers. As a result of Nick saving Leila from attempting suicide, she secretly follows him in her nightdress and without shoes. She even shows up at his doorstep that same night. Despite her refusal to return to the clinic, Leila and Nick embark on a road trip together to attend his brother’s wedding where his ex-girlfriend will also be present. During the trip, their relationship intensifies. But, after arguments with his family, Nick once again tries to hospitalize Leila. This leads him to admit that he has developed feelings for her.
