Basic (2003)
Basic (2003) is a mystery-action thriller directed by John McTiernan and written by James Vanderbilt. During a live fire exercise in the jungles of Panama, Army Rangers trainees are led by their instructor and Master Sergeant Nathan West. Sergeant Ray Dunbar emerges from the jungle with wounded Second Lieutenant Levi Kendall, pursued by Sergeant Mueller whom Dunbar kills in self-defense. Although no other casualties are found, West’s team is presumed dead. Dunbar refuses to cooperate with Military Police investigator Captain Julia Osborne and requests to speak with a fellow Ranger from outside the base, displaying an ‘8’ on a piece of paper. The post commander, Colonel Bill Styles, brings in his friend Tom Hardy, an experienced interrogator and ex-Ranger turned DEA agent, to assist Osborne.
Upon questioning the survivors, they discovered that West was notorious for his abusive behavior as a sergeant. One of the trainees, Jay Pike, had been on the receiving end of West’s anger for disobedience and is now a suspect in the murder. Kendall, who happens to be both the son of a high-ranking military official and openly homosexual, alleges that West held a grudge against him and may have deliberately caused his death under the guise of a ‘training accident’. According to Kendall, West was struck by a phosphorus grenade thrown from behind. Dunbar initially wanted to turn Pike over to authorities after his confession, but things escalated quickly when a shootout erupted and resulted in the deaths of most trainees. However, Dunbar disputes Kendall’s claims and asserts that Mueller and Castro were actually involved in an illegal drug trade that West had uncovered.
