Tim Burton directed Batman Returns (1992), a superhero movie with a screenplay by Daniel Waters. Set in Gotham City, the film tells the story of two wealthy parents who reject their deformed son Oswald and leave him to be raised by penguins in the sewers. Thirty-three years later, during the holiday season, a powerful businessman named Max Shreck is kidnapped by the Red Triangle gang – a former circus troupe known for abducting children across the country – and taken to an abandoned zoo. The leader of the gang, Oswald (now going by the name Penguin), uses evidence of Shreck’s wrongdoing to blackmail him into helping Oswald regain his status among Gotham’s elite. With Shreck’s help, Oswald stages a fake kidnapping of the mayor’s baby, allowing him to become a beloved public figure.
In return, Oswald demands access to the city’s birth records in order to uncover his true identity as one of Gotham’s first-born sons. When Shreck discovers that his timid secretary, Selina Kyle, has stumbled upon his plan to control Gotham’s electricity through a hidden power plant, he attempts to kill her by pushing her out of a window. However, Selina survives and returns home with a newfound determination. She creates a costume and takes on the persona of Catwoman. Upon returning to work, Selina catches the eye of wealthy visitor Bruce Wayne who is secretly the vigilante known as Batman. Wayne begins to suspect Oswald’s involvement with the criminal organization Red Triangle and investigates further. To secure his power plant plans without opposition, Shreck manipulates Oswald into running for mayor and discrediting the current incumbent by using Red Triangle to create chaos throughout Gotham.
