Battleship (2012) is an American military science fiction action film, adapted from the popular board game. Directed by Peter Berg from a script by brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber, the film takes place in 2005 on ‘Planet G’, a possibly habitable world. During this time, a communications array is constructed in Oahu to connect with any extraterrestrial life. It is here where Alex Hopper crosses paths with Samantha Shane, daughter of Admiral Terrance Shane, while trying to impress her. After getting arrested, Alex’s brother Commander Stone Hopper enlists him in the U.S. Navy against his wishes. Fast forward six years and Alex is now a lieutenant aboard the USS John Paul Jones and involved in a romantic relationship with Sam, who works as a physical therapist for wounded veterans.
Stone, on the other hand, leads by example as commander of the USS Sampson while Alex continues to struggle with discipline and potential discharge despite his evident skill. During the 2012 RIMPAC exercise, five extraterrestrial spaceships suddenly appear. One of them collides with a satellite and crashes into the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, causing significant damage. The other four ships submerge into the waters near Hawaii. As they explore the area, the naval vessels Sampson, John Paul Jones, and JDS Myōkō stumble upon a strange structure that creates a forcefield around the Hawaiian Islands. This forcefield blocks all forms of communication and radar signals, effectively cutting off the three destroyers from the rest of the world. Suddenly, three alien warships emerge from beneath the surface and begin attacking.
