Battlestar Galactica (2003) is an American military science fiction television series and a part of the larger franchise. The show depicts a war between the Twelve Colonies of Kobol, home to humans, and the Cylons, robots created by humans. After a period of peace lasting 40 years, the Cylons launch a sudden nuclear attack with the aim of wiping out humanity. The attack is devastating, decimating nearly all human life in the Twelve Colonies and crippling their military forces due to a malicious computer virus introduced by Number Six, a Cylon in human form. She utilized her relationship with renowned scientist Dr. Gaius Baltar to gain access codes through an insider contract bid.
The Battlestar Galactica, a hybrid battleship/aircraft carrier that fought in the previous war, is nearing completion of its decommissioning and conversion into a museum when the attack strikes. Throughout its extended period of service with the colonies, the Galactica’s computer systems were never connected, thus shielding it from Cylon sabotage. As the commander of what remains of the human fleet, William Adama takes charge and leads them to Ragnar Anchorage, a military armory station where they can replenish their stockpile of weapons and vital resources.
