Adapted by Mary Agnes Donoghue, the American comedy-drama film Beaches (1988) is based on Iris Rainer Dart’s 1985 novel of the same name and directed by Garry Marshall. During a concert rehearsal in Los Angeles, New York actress and singer Cecilia Carol ‘C.C.’ Bloom receives a note and hastily departs to be with her friend Hillary Whitney, a San Francisco heiress and lawyer. As she drives through the night, C.C. reflects on their lifelong friendship that began under the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey back in 1958. At the time, Hillary was lost while C.C. was hiding from her overbearing stage mother Leona. Despite their different backgrounds, they become close pen-friends but face different paths as they grow up – Hillary becomes a human rights lawyer while C.C.’s singing career falters.
In their first meeting since Atlantic City, Hillary shows up at the dive bar where C.C. is performing and ends up moving in with her while working for ACLU. Finally, things start looking up for C.C. when she lands a job with John Pierce, a renowned theatrical director. The bond between the two women is challenged by romantic entanglements, but consistently perseveres through these trials. Ultimately, C.C. achieves success as a Broadway performer while Hillary begins a relationship with Michael Essex. However, tension arises as C.C. critiques Hillary for abandoning her legal career and Hillary accuses C.C. of being overly focused on her own fame. It appears that their friendship has come to an end.
