Beast (2022)
Beast (2022), a survival action horror-thriller film directed by Baltasar Kormákur and written by Ryan Engle, tells the story of recently widowed Dr. Nate Samuels and his daughters, Meredith and Norah. They have arrived at the Mopani Reserve in South Africa for a much-needed vacation. Nate is reunited with his old friend Martin Battles, a biologist and manager of the reserve who had initially introduced Nate to his wife. Martin offers to take them to the village where Nate’s wife grew up. As they explore the restricted areas of the reserve on their tour the next day, Martin notices an injured lion among the local pride and shares that Nate has confided in him about feeling guilty for being distant during their separation before her terminal cancer diagnosis. This trip is a way for Nate to reconnect with his daughters after such a difficult time.
In a nearby Tsonga community, Martin discovers that the majority of the population has perished. He suspects a rogue lion may be responsible and quickly returns to report his findings. Along the road, Nate comes across an injured Tsonga man but unfortunately, is unable to save him. As Martin tracks the lion, he is attacked and ultimately injured. The lion then targets Nate, who seeks refuge in their car. However, Meredith’s attempt to flee results in a collision with a tree, leaving them stranded. With a walkie-talkie in hand, Martin warns Nate to stay away as he believes the lion is using him as bait. Unfortunately, they are out of range to call for help and must rely on Nate’s ability to assemble a tranquilizer rifle. Hoping to recover Martin and make it back to civilization safely, Nate confronts the lion head-on. In the midst of chaos, Meredith takes advantage of the situation and saves Martin from harm’s way.
