Beatriz at Dinner (2017) is a comedy drama film directed by Miguel Arteta from a screenplay by Mike White. The movie follows the story of a Hispanic woman in her late forties, who begins her day with an unusual dream – she’s in a rowboat in a mangrove swamp, and spots a little white goat on the shore. After waking up, Beatriz tends to her two dogs and another brown goat that she keeps in her bedroom, reminding them to keep quiet. She then proceeds to prepare for the day ahead, meditating and lighting candles at an altar adorned with photos of a man and the same white goat from her dream. Driving an old Volkswagon that takes its time starting up, Beatriz heads out from her modest Los Angeles house towards a cancer center where she offers alternative treatments to patients such as massage, aromatherapy and breathing exercises. In a hurry to make it to her next appointment in Newport Beach during rush hour, she arrives slightly behind schedule at the grand house located in a gated community.

Cathy, a middle-aged builder’s wife and Beatriz’s client, is throwing a party for her husband’s colleagues. During the massage, Cathy shares how much her daughter is thriving in college, thanks to Beatriz’s previous care during her recovery from chemotherapy. Beatriz then sadly reveals her belief that her neighbor, who has complained about noise and reported her goats to the city, may have killed one of her goats by breaking its neck while it was in her yard. Unfortunately, after the massage, Beatriz experiences car trouble and calls a friend for help. However, due to their availability hours later, Cathy spontaneously invites Beatriz to join their dinner party. She insists that Beatriz play guitar and sing after dinner. Grant, Cathy’s husband and host of his business associates, objects privately to this last-minute addition. Nevertheless, Cathy stands by her decision as she considers Beatriz a family friend who should be included.
