Beetlejuice (1988)
Beetlejuice (1988) is a movie directed by Tim Burton, which falls under the genre of American fantasy horror comedy. In Winter River, Connecticut, a married couple named Barbara and Adam Maitland spend their vacation decorating their picturesque country home. During a drive back from town, Barbara swerves to avoid a dog which results in their car crashing through the side of a covered bridge and into the river. Upon returning home, they notice that they no longer have reflections. When Adam tries to leave the house, he finds himself in an otherworldly desert-like landscape filled with large ‘sandworms’. Although it only lasts for a few seconds for him, when Barbara saves him she reveals that he was missing for two hours. Later, they come across a Handbook for the Recently Deceased which leads them to understand that they drowned in the river and are now ghosts.
After selling the house, the Deetz family from New York City takes over. Charles, a previous real estate developer, is joined by his second wife Delia, who works as a sculptor and conceptual artist. Lydia, Charles’ teenage daughter from his first marriage and an aspiring photographer, completes the family dynamic. With guidance from interior designer Otho, the Deetzes transform the house into a new-wave masterpiece of postmodern art. Following the instructions in their Handbook, the Maitlands journey to a supernatural waiting room filled with other restless souls. Here, they learn that the afterlife operates under a complicated bureaucracy involving vouchers and caseworkers. Their own caseworker, Juno, explains that they must remain in the house for 125 years or face severe consequences. If they wish to remove the Deetz family from their home, it is their responsibility to frighten them away.
