Before Night Falls (2000)

Before Night Falls (2000) is an American biographical drama film directed by Julian Schnabel, based on the eponymous autobiography by Reinaldo Arenas, which was originally published in English in 1993. Set in Oriente Province, Cuba in 1943, it follows Arenas as he is raised by his single mother and her parents before the family relocates to Holguín. Moving to Havana in the 1960s to further his education, Reinaldo embarks on a journey of self-discovery and explores both his ambitions and his sexuality. After receiving an honorary mention in a writing contest, he is presented with an opportunity to publish his first work.
While living and socializing with openly gay individuals such as Pepe Malas and Tomas Diego, Arenas discovers his true identity. However, the political climate in Cuba grows increasingly perilous, resulting in Arenas being detained in the early 1970s for supposed sexual assault on minors and unauthorized publishing abroad. This pattern of imprisonment and failed attempts to escape the country continues throughout the following decade. In 1980, he eventually escapes to the United States to begin a new chapter with his close friend Lazaro Gomez Carriles. Sadly, a few years later, Arenas is diagnosed with AIDS and after enduring years of suffering, he passes away in 1990.
