Behind the Candelabra (2013), an American biographical comedy drama television film directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Richard LaGravenese, is based on the book of the same name by Scott Thorson and Alex Thorleifson. In 1977, 18-year-old Scott, an animal trainer for movies, meets Hollywood producer Bob Black in a gay bar in Los Angeles. Encouraged by Black, he leaves his adopted home in search of better job opportunities. Black introduces him to Liberace, who immediately takes a liking to him. Thorson is invited backstage and then to Liberace’s lavish home in Las Vegas. Upon noticing that one of Liberace’s dogs is temporarily blinded, Thorson uses his expertise as a veterinary assistant to cure the condition. This leads to Liberace requesting him to be his ‘assistant’ and also employs him as his stage chauffeur, driving a Rolls-Royce limousine onto the stage for grand entrances.
Thorson moves in with Liberace and becomes his lover. As a bisexual man, Thorson opens up to Liberace and explains his attraction towards women. Liberace sympathizes with him, revealing that despite trying and wanting to love women, he is exclusively attracted to men. He shares a personal experience of receiving a divine message that assured him of God’s unconditional love. It gradually becomes apparent that Liberace has a desire to shape Thorson into a younger version of himself. He even requests his plastic surgeon, Dr. Jack Startz, to alter Scott’s face to match his own and makes an unsuccessful attempt at formal adoption. Frustrated with Liberace’s attempts at control and their secret romance, Thorson turns to drugs.
