Ben Is Back (2018)
Ben Is Back (2018), an American drama written and directed by Peter Hedges, follows Holly Burns as she returns from church on Christmas Eve to find her son Ben in the driveway. After spending months in rehab for prescription drug addiction, Ben’s sponsor suggested he take a trip home. While happy to see him again, Holly is also cautious of his past struggles and their effect on their family. She agrees to let him stay for 24 hours, under the condition that he does not leave her side. During a holiday shopping trip at the mall, Holly unexpectedly comes across Ben’s former doctor who is now suffering from dementia. She confronts him for prescribing painkillers that led to her son’s addiction after a snowboarding accident during his younger years. Later, Ben reconnects with an old friend and fellow addict named Spencer. He confides in Holly that he needs to attend a support group meeting and later shares his story of nearly overdosing, but being saved by Holly and their beloved dog Ponce.”
After discovering drugs on Ben, he claims they were given to him by a girl at a meeting. Holly becomes angry and takes him to the cemetery, asking where he wants to be buried. That night, after returning home from church, the family realizes someone has broken in and taken Ponce. Connecting it to Ben, he leaves the house to look for Ponce. Holly follows in her car and finds Ben in a nearby neighborhood. He blames himself for putting his family in danger. Together, they search for Ponce but are unsuccessful. While having dinner at a diner, Ben confesses that he got Maggie hooked on drugs and feels responsible for her death. Spencer appears and, after a scuffle, confirms that Clayton – a former drug dealer of Ben’s – took Ponce. When Ben tells Holly to go home, she refuses.
