Beowulf (2007)
Beowulf (2007) is an American animated fantasy action film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. It is based on the Old English epic poem of the same name. In 507, the legendary Geatish warrior Beowulf embarks on a journey to Denmark with his soldiers, including his closest companion Wiglaf. King Hrothgar seeks Beowulf’s help in defeating Grendel, a deformed and powerful troll who has been terrorizing the kingdom and killing many of Hrothgar’s warriors during a feast at the mead hall Heorot. Upon arrival, Beowulf becomes enamored with Hrothgar’s wife Queen Wealtheow. The men devise a plan to lure Grendel out by enjoying festivities at Heorot while Beowulf strategically prepares for their confrontation. During their battle, Beowulf discovers Grendel’s weakness – hypersensitive hearing – and exploits it by rupturing his eardrum. Despite being mortally wounded after having his arm severed by Beowulf, Grendel manages to escape in his diminished state. In gratitude for freeing their kingdom from the monster’s reign of terror,
Grendel’s mother, filled with vengeance, ventures to Heorot and ravages Beowulf’s men under the cloak of darkness. Hrothgar reveals to both Beowulf and Wiglaf that she is the last of the Water Demons. Unferth, adviser to Hrothgar, offers Beowulf his sword Hrunting to slay her. With Wiglaf at his side, Beowulf enters the demon’s cave alone and is faced with a stunning, golden woman. Despite using Hrunting as a weapon, he is no match for her enchantments. She tempts him with the promises of kingship and a new son to replace Grendel, which he ultimately agrees to after sharing a kiss. Upon returning to Heorot with Grendel’s head, Beowulf proudly proclaims his triumph over Grendel’s mother.
