Big (1988)
The American fantasy comedy-drama film Big (1988), directed by Penny Marshall and starring Tom Hanks, follows the story of twelve-year-old Josh Baskin. Josh attempts to impress a girl at a carnival ride, but is turned away due to his height. Feeling down, he puts a coin in an old fortune-teller machine named Zoltar and wishes to be ‘big’. To his surprise, the machine grants his wish, but he soon realizes it had been unplugged the whole time. The next morning, Josh wakes up as an adult and immediately sets out to find the machine. However, he discovers that the carnival has already moved on. When he returns home and tries to explain everything to his mom, she mistakes him for a stranger and chases him out of the house in a panic.
After finding his best friend Billy at school, Josh convinces him of his identity by singing a song that only they know. With Billy’s assistance, he discovers that it will take six weeks to find the Zoltar machine again. Thus, Josh rents a room in a flophouse in New York City and secures a job as a data entry clerk at the MacMillan Toy Company. At FAO Schwarz, he meets Mr. MacMillan, the company’s owner, and impresses him with his knowledge of current toys and child-like excitement. While playing duets on the store’s Walking Piano, MacMillan is so impressed that he invites Josh to join a large marketing campaign pitch meeting with senior executives. During the meeting, Josh surprises and challenges the executives by bluntly stating that their toy is not fun.
