Big Fish (2003)
Big Fish (2003), directed by Tim Burton and based on the novel Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions by Daniel Wallace, follows the life of Edward Bloom. At his son William’s wedding, Edward reminisces about the day Will was born, claiming to have caught a giant catfish with his wedding ring as bait. Growing up, Will often heard these fantastical stories, but never believed them to be true. This caused a rift between him and his father. However, when Edward is diagnosed with cancer years later, Will and his pregnant wife Joséphine visit Edward at their childhood home in Alabama. The story of Edward’s life unfolds through flashbacks, starting with his encounter with a witch in his hometown of Ashton. Despite being shown his own death by the witch, Edward remains unfazed. As he grows older and feels confined by small-town life, he embarks on an adventure with Karl, a misunderstood giant from a traveling circus.
While traveling down separate paths, Edward and Karl stumble upon a fork in the road. Edward’s path leads him through a swamp and to the hidden town of Spectre. There, he makes friends with poet Norther Winslow and the mayor’s daughter, Jenny. Despite not wanting to stay in Spectre, Edward promises to return to Jenny before leaving. Later, at Joséphine’s request, Edward shares with her the story of how he met his wife Sandra while Will eavesdrops outside the door. Returning to his memories, Edward and Karl visit the Calloway Circus where Edward becomes infatuated with a beautiful woman. They both end up getting jobs at the circus and their boss Amos Calloway reveals one detail about the woman every month. It’s not until three years later that Edward discovers Amos is actually a werewolf, but he bears no ill will towards him.
