Big Hero 6: The Series (2017–2021), an American superhero animated TV show, debuted in November 2017 and concluded in February 2021. Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series was co-created by Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley (known for Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and Kim Possible). It is based on Disney’s film Big Hero 6 (loosely inspired by Marvel Comics’ comic book series of the same name) and serves as a sequel to the original movie. Utilizing traditional hand-drawn animation, the series follows tech prodigy Hiro Hamada and his lovable robot Baymax after the events of the film. Joined by their friends Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Go Go, and Fred, they form the superhero squad Big Hero 6 to protect their city from various enhanced villains.
In addition to academic struggles, Hiro also faces social obstacles as the new genius at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology (SFIT). The series presents a slight inconsistency with the conclusion of the original film. This includes Aunt Cass being aware of Baymax’s existence and Hiro resuming his studies at SFIT without any mention of receiving a grant from the institute (although a building is constructed in Tadashi’s memory). Contrary to the movie’s implication that Hiro came up with the name ‘Big Hero 6’, Fred actually suggests it after brainstorming and testing various team names on his own.
