Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020) is a comedic science fiction film directed by Dean Parisot and written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. Serving as the third installment in the Bill & Ted film series, it follows the events of its predecessor, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991). Almost three decades after their last adventure, Bill and Ted have not fulfilled their destiny of creating a song that will bring unity to the world. As a result, their marriages are faltering and their careers are dwindling while the fabric of time and space begins to crumble. To save reality from collapsing, Kelly – daughter of the late Rufus who previously guided them through time – brings them to San Dimas, California in the year 2720. The Great Leader, Kelly’s mother, informs them that they must compose this crucial song before 7:17 p.m. that evening. Desperate to fulfill their mission, they use Rufus’s trusty time-traveling phone booth to retrieve the song from their future selves only to discover that they have also failed. Their wives have left them and they hold their past selves accountable for this defeat.
An impatient Great Leader dispatches a time-traveling robot, named Dennis, in hopes of tempering reality. Kelly ventures back to the present to warn her friends about the impending danger, but unexpectedly comes face-to-face with their daughters, Billie and Thea. Together, the three devise a plan to create the crucial song. Using Kelly’s time machine, Thea and Billie enlist the help of legendary musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Louis Armstrong, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ling Lun and Grom – a prehistoric drummer. Once they have assembled their band, they return to the present where they meet up with Kelly and a displaced Kid Cudi. However, through a series of unfortunate events caused by Dennis’ actions, they all end up in Hell. In a twist of fate, Bill and Ted travel to 2067 and discover their future selves on their deathbeds. The elder Bill and Ted hand over a USB drive containing the coveted song by ‘Preston / Logan’, insisting that it must be played precisely at 7:17 p.m at ‘MP 46’.
