Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991) marked Pete Hewitt’s first time directing a feature film. The music of Wyld Stallyns has brought about a utopian future society, but a terrorist named Chuck De Nomolos aims to change that. In the year 2691, he attacks Bill & Ted University and steals a time-traveling phone booth to send evil robot replicas of the duo back in time. His goal? To prevent them from winning the San Dimas Battle of the Bands and altering what he views as a foolish and frivolous society. Despite Rufus’ efforts to stop him, De Nomolos seemingly succeeds and Rufus becomes lost in the circuits of time. In the present day, Bill and Ted are auditioning for the upcoming battle, while their girlfriends (and former 15th-century princesses) Joanna and Elizabeth have become skilled musicians. However, our lovable duo is still lacking in musical talent.
Despite this, Ms. Wardroe, the organizer, assures them a final spot in the contest and promises a record deal and $25,000 prize money if they win. After celebrating at a party, the duo proposes to their girlfriends just as evil robots from the future arrive. The robots lure them away to Vasquez Rocks where they meet their demise by being thrown off a cliff. As a result, the robots set out to destroy Bill and Ted’s potential fame and relationships with their fiancées. In the afterlife, Death greets Bill and Ted’s souls and offers them a chance to challenge him in a game for their souls, but warns that no one has ever won before. Despite giving Death a ‘melvin’ and escaping, their attempts to seek help from the police through possession or even at a séance held by Missy both prove futile as they are sent to Hell instead.
