In the year 2688, humanity lives in a perfect society thanks to the influence of William ‘Bill’ S. Preston, Esq., and Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan, known as the Two Great Ones. Rufus is selected by leaders to time-travel back to San Dimas, California in 1988 using a phone booth-shaped machine. His mission is to ensure that two dim-witted high school students, Bill and Ted, pass their history class. If they fail, they will not graduate and Ted’s father (police Captain Logan) plans to send him to military school in Alaska. This outcome would end their band Wyld Stallyns and alter history. Rufus finds them at a Circle K convenience store struggling with their history report about how historical figures would view modern-day San Dimas.
Before another phone-booth time machine appears and future versions of Bill and Ted emerge, Rufus offers his help. He assures the present-day duo that his claims are valid and they can trust him. Afterwards, they all disappear in the time booth. There, Rufus demonstrates how to operate it, taking them back to 1805 where they witness Napoleon Bonaparte engaged in a battle against Austria. As they return to the present, Napoleon gets caught in their wake and is dragged through the Circuits of Time with them after being hit by a cannonball explosion. Rufus reminds Bill and Ted that time will continue as normal for them and that they must not miss their class presentation the next day. With that, he bids them farewell and leaves the empty time booth for their use.
