Bird on a Wire (1990)
Bird on a Wire (1990), directed by John Badham, tells the story of Attorney Marianne ‘Muffie’ Graves and her unexpected encounter with her former fiancé Rick Jarmin. While in Detroit for a business deal, Marianne discovers that Rick, who she believed to be dead after a plane crash, is actually alive and living under an assumed identity as part of the Witness Protection Program. After witnessing an attempt on his life by DEA agents Eugene Sorenson and Albert ‘Diggs’ Diggins – who were released from prison due to Rick’s testimony – Marianne decides to help Rick go on the run. She soon learns that Rick’s old FBI handler has retired and his replacement, agent Joe Weyburn, is being blackmailed into working with Sorenson. Despite their tense history, Marianne and Rick reconcile and engage in a passionate encounter.
Reluctant to rely on the local authorities or his acquaintance Weyburn, Rick is determined to make contact with his former FBI contact Lou Baird in Wisconsin. Utilizing their connections from Rick’s former life of secrecy and hiding, he and Maryanne return to a beauty salon where Rick had previously worked undercover as a flamboyant hairstylist. They also seek assistance from Rachel Varney, an old love interest who is now a veterinarian. With her help, they manage to evade a pair of dangerous hitmen who are pursuing them by helicopter. However, when they finally reach Baird’s residence, they are disappointed to discover that he is suffering from severe amnesia and is unable to provide any useful information. Shortly after, Sorenson, Diggs, and Weyburn arrive on the scene forcing Rick and Maryanne to take refuge at a nearby zoo where Rick used to be employed.
