He is separated from Marambra, the children’s mother who struggles with alcoholism and bipolar disorder. Having grown up as an orphan, Uxbal only has his brother Tito for family support – Tito works in construction and sometimes solicits Marambra’s services. To make a living, Uxbal arranges work for Chinese immigrants who create counterfeit designer goods that are sold by African street vendors. Additionally, he also works as a medium to deliver messages from the recently deceased at wakes and funerals. However, when he receives a terminal prostate cancer diagnosis with only a few months to live, Uxbal’s world begins to crumble.
Initially, Uxbal undergoes chemotherapy, but later he follows the advice of his friend Bea, an alternative healer, and discontinues the treatment. Before he passes away, Bea gives him two black stones to pass on to his children. Despite regularly bribing the police, a group of Africans is brutally arrested for their involvement in drug dealing. Upon one member being deported back to Senegal, Uxbal offers his wife Ige and their baby son a place to stay in his apartment. In an attempt at reconciliation with Marambra, Uxbal is disappointed to discover that she cannot be trusted with their children. As Tito brokers a deal for unemployed Chinese workers to be employed at a construction site, tragedy strikes when most of them die from carbon monoxide poisoning due to the unsafe gas heaters bought by Uxbal in an effort to assist them.
