Black and White (1999), an American drama film by director James Toback, follows the life of Rich Bower. As a mover and shaker in the rap music scene, he is also involved in numerous other legitimate and illegitimate business ventures. His apartment serves as a popular gathering spot for musicians, hangers-on, and hipsters striving to fit into what they perceive as the most fashionable crowd. Among them are a group of white kids seeking acceptance within this community. Sam Shields, a filmmaker, is working on a documentary about Rich and his inner circle with the assistance of her husband Terry Downey, who feels out of place as a homosexual in this world.
Dean, Rich’s childhood friend from Houston and a talented college basketball player, is approached by bookmaker Mark with an offer to throw a game for money. Despite his initial reservations, Dean accepts the deal and soon realizes his mistake when he learns that Mark is actually a cop trying to gather information on Rich. As the situation escalates, Rich discovers that Dean may be pressured into snitching in order to avoid jail time. In desperation, he turns to one of the white teenagers who often hangs out with them and asks him to eliminate Dean. Little does he know, this particular teen happens to be the District Attorney’s son.
