Black Crab (2022) is a Swedish action thriller directed by Adam Berg. The film is adapted from Jerker Virdborg’s novel, Svart krabba, and features a screenplay by Berg and Pelle Rådström. It opens with Edh and her daughter, Vanja, stuck in traffic when they are suddenly ambushed by enemy forces. Fast forward a few years and we see Edh now serving as a soldier, arriving at the base after traveling by train. She is dropped off by a lieutenant in a dangerous neighborhood, where she must fend off attackers before finally reaching the base. There, she meets Colonel Raad and is introduced to her fellow soldiers: Karimi, Malik, Granvik (a skilled sniper), and Captain Forsberg.
The Colonel details the team’s objective: to traverse the frozen Stockholm Archipelago by skating and deliver canisters to a research station called Ödö. He emphasizes that this mission could potentially turn the tides of war in their favor. While Edh voices concerns about the danger of this mission, she ultimately agrees to join in hopes of reuniting with her friend Vanja, who had been located in a refugee camp. The group departs while Ödö is under attack, and they are joined by Nylund, the lieutenant who had previously abandoned Edh. Tragically, Forsberg falls through the ice and drowns. In an act of bravery, Edh jumps into the freezing water to retrieve the canisters from Forsberg’s backpack. Although she successfully saves the packages, Forsberg’s body is left behind.
