Black Mass (2015)
The American biographical crime drama film, Black Mass (2015), tells the story of notorious mobster Whitey Bulger. Directed by Scott Cooper and written by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth, it is based on Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill’s 2001 book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob. Set in 1975, the film follows James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, leader of the Winter Hill Gang, as he maintains control over organized crime in South Boston with his associates Stephen Flemmi, Kevin Weeks, and Johnny Martorano. Bulger shares a home with his girlfriend Lindsey Cyr and their young son Douglas. However, his dominance is challenged by a rival gang from the North End known as the Angiulo Brothers, who are part of the New England Mafia family. The arrival of FBI agent John Connolly complicates things further; having grown up in South Boston as a friend to Whitey and his brother William ‘Billy’ Bulger, who happens to be the Massachusetts Senate President.
Upon the Angiulo Brothers hiring a motorcycle-riding hitman to take out a Winter Hill soldier, Whitey becomes an informant for Connolly. With Connolly’s belief that Whitey can help him penetrate the Angiulos’ organization, Whitey reluctantly agrees to cooperate, despite his disdain for being labeled a rat. He understands the advantages of such protection for himself, his gang, and his loved ones. Tragically, Douglas is afflicted with Reye syndrome and Lindsey makes the difficult decision to remove him from life support, much to Whitey’s protest. Though John Morris supports Connolly’s actions, their boss Charles McGuire remains suspicious. As Whitey continues to take advantage of his informant status, he cleverly uses Connolly’s ‘protection’ as a disguise for his illegal activities. When asked by Connolly for intel on where the Angiulos conduct their racketeering operations, Whitey provides photos of their rivals’ hideouts, enabling the FBI to install wiretaps undetected.
