Black Rain (1989)
Black Rain (1989), a neo-noir action thriller directed by Ridley Scott, tells the story of Nick Conklin, an NYPD detective facing scrutiny from Internal Affairs due to allegations of stolen drug bust money with his former partner. To add to his struggles, he is also falling behind on alimony payments. Following an intense interview with Internal Affairs, Nick and his current partner Charlie Vincent witness a violent encounter between a Mafioso and Japanese men disrupted when yakuza member Koji Sato enters the scene, retrieving a small package from them before killing them. After arresting Sato, they are ordered to escort him back to Osaka by the Japanese Embassy. However, upon arriving in Osaka, they are deceived by yakuza posing as police officers who take Sato from them before the actual authorities arrive.
While relaying the events, Nick and Charlie successfully convince the Osaka prefectural police to allow them to observe the investigation on Sato’s activities. Assistant Inspector Masahiro Matsumoto accompanies them. At a nightclub, Nick meets Joyce, a hostess from Chicago who reveals that Sato is engaged in a gang war with a powerful oyabun named Kunio Sugai. The following day, without authorization, Nick and Charlie join a police raid and Nick takes several US$100 bills from the crime scene. He later proves to Matsumoto and his superior that these bills are part of a counterfeiting war between rival yakuza groups. After spending an evening with Matsumoto, a drunken Nick and Charlie stroll back to their hotel when suddenly a motorcyclist grabs Charlie’s trench coat and leads him into an underground parking garage.
