Blade (1998) is an American superhero film directed by Stephen Norrington and written by David S. Goyer. It is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. In 1967, a pregnant woman is attacked and dies, while doctors are able to save her baby. Thirty years later, that baby has grown up to become Blade, a hybrid with supernatural abilities similar to those of vampires. However, unlike them, he does not have their weaknesses except for the need to consume human blood. During a raid on a Los Angeles rave club owned by vampire Deacon Frost, Blade encounters Karen Jenson, who is then taken by him to a safe house where his old friend Abraham Whistler can treat her injuries inflicted by another vampire who had killed Dr. Curtis Webb at the hospital she worked at.

According to Whistler, he and Blade have been engaged in a covert battle against vampires, utilizing weapons tailored to exploit their elemental weaknesses such as sunlight, silver, and garlic. Now that Karen has been ‘marked’ by a vampire bite, both he and Blade advise her to vacate the city. At a gathering of the council of pure-blood vampire elders, Frost, the leader of a faction of younger vampires, is chastised for attempting to instigate hostilities between vampires and humans. Due to the fact that Frost and his followers are not natural-born vampires, they hold a lower social status. Meanwhile, upon returning home to her apartment, Karen finds herself under attack from familiar police officer Krieger – a human who pledges allegiance to the vampire cause.
