Blonde (2022)
Blonde (2022) is an American biographical psychological drama film written and directed by Andrew Dominik, based on the 2000 novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. The movie offers a fictionalized portrayal of American actress Marilyn Monroe, portrayed by Ana de Armas. Norma Jeane Mortenson grows up with her mentally unstable mother, Gladys Pearl Baker. On her seventh birthday in 1933, she receives a framed picture of a man that Gladys claims is her father. That night, a fire breaks out in the Hollywood Hills, and Gladys takes Norma Jeane to the scene, believing her father lives there. However, they are asked to leave by the police. When they return home, an angry Gladys attempts to drown Norma Jeane in the bathtub after she asks about her father but lets her go. The frightened young girl seeks refuge at her neighbor Miss Flynn’s house, who assures her she will be safe.
After some time had passed, Norma Jeane was placed in an orphanage as her mother Gladys was deemed unfit to care for a child and admitted to a mental hospital. By the 1940s, Norma Jeane had gained fame as a pin-up model using the name “Marilyn Monroe” and gracing the covers of magazines and calendars. As she pursued an acting career, she experienced a traumatic incident at the hands of film studio president Mr. Z. Despite this, in 1951, she auditions for the role of Nell in Don’t Bother to Knock and although she breaks down during the audition, she impresses the casting director enough to secure the part.
