Blood Diamond (2006)
Blood Diamond (2006) is a political action thriller film directed and co-produced by Edward Zwick, set in Sierra Leone during the late 1990s civil war. The country is ravaged, with the Revolutionary United Front terrorizing locals and forcing them to mine diamonds to fund their war efforts. Among those enslaved is Solomon Vandy, a Mende fisherman from Shenge who is torn from his family and forced to work under the brutal Captain Poison. One day, while mining along a river, Vandy uncovers a large pink diamond. Poison attempts to steal it, but their operation is interrupted by government troops. Desperate to protect the stone, Vandy buries it before being captured and sent to Freetown for imprisonment alongside fellow inmate Danny Archer – a white Rhodesian gunrunner and veteran of the Border War – who had been caught trying to smuggle diamonds into Liberia for corrupt South African mining executive Rudolph van de Kaap.
Upon hearing about the pink diamond while in prison, Archer takes action to secure his and Vandy’s freedom. He heads to Cape Town to meet with his employer, Colonel Coetzee – a former member of the apartheid-era South African Defence Force who now leads a private military company. Having served under Coetzee in the 32 Battalion, Archer has a proposition for him: he wants the diamond in order to retire after selling it to van de Kaap, but Coetzee sees it as retribution for Archer’s failed smuggling mission. After returning to Sierra Leone and finding Vandy, Archer offers to assist him in locating his family in exchange for their partnership in retrieving the diamond. As chaos ensues with the RUF taking over Freetown and Vandy’s son Dia becoming a child soldier under Captain Poison, the two men must navigate through dangerous territory to achieve their goals.
