In pursuit of the man, McCaleb wounds him but suffers a heart attack and ends the chase. Following his retirement, McCaleb resides on a houseboat in Long Beach and receives a life-saving heart transplant after two years. Soon after, he is approached by Graciella Rivers, whose sister Gloria was killed in a robbery. She asks for his help in solving the case and it’s revealed that Gloria’s heart was transplanted into McCaleb. As he struggles with nightmares about the robbery and Gloria’s murder, he delves deeper into the investigation.
Ignoring his physician’s advice, McCaleb enlists the help of houseboat neighbor Jasper ‘Buddy’ Noone and local police detective Jaye Winston to uncover the true murderer. Along the way, he suspects multiple wrong individuals before finally realizing that Buddy is the culprit. Despite knowing about McCaleb’s need for a heart transplant, Buddy deliberately kills Gloria in order to continue their twisted game. As McCaleb learns of Buddy’s actions, he also discovers that Graciella and her nephew, Raymond, have been kidnapped by him. A confrontation ensues on an abandoned fishing boat where both men engage in a shootout. In a second altercation, McCaleb shoots and wounds Buddy before he can reach for his weapon.
