Blue Jasmine (2013)
Blue Jasmine (2013), a film from writer and director Woody Allen, follows the story of Jasmine Francis as she arrives in San Francisco from her flight from New York City. Upon arriving at her sister Ginger’s apartment, it is revealed that despite claiming to be broke, Jasmine traveled first class. This revelation disappoints Ginger, who soon learns that Jasmine has suffered a nervous breakdown and sought refuge with her sister due to heavy debts. In a series of flashbacks, it is uncovered that Jasmine’s husband, Hal Francis, was arrested for defrauding his clients. Among his victims were Ginger and her husband Augie, who lost $200,000 in lottery winnings that Augie had planned to use for starting a business. This ultimately led to the downfall of their marriage.
After Danny dropped out of Harvard and cut ties with her, Jasmine’s life took a downward spiral. Struggling with the loss of her husband Hal, she resorted to heavy drinking and abusing anti-anxiety medication. Her isolation led her to talk to herself about her past, a habit that became increasingly apparent. Ginger, now dating a mechanic named Chili, is not well-liked by Jasmine due to his uncouth manners. Despite this, Jasmine feels confident in her ‘great taste’ and prior experience in decorating homes and considers pursuing a career as an interior designer. However, lacking computer skills, she decides to enroll in a basic computer class before attempting online courses. With no source of income, she reluctantly accepts a job as a receptionist at a dental office where she faces constant sexual harassment from her boss.
