Bob the Gambler (1956) is a French heist gangster film directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. He lives alone in Paris’ Montmartre district, where the demi-monde community holds him in high regard. A former bank robber and convict, Bob has kept out of trouble for two decades and is even on friendly terms with Ledru, a police commissioner whom he once saved. Always a gentleman, Bob takes in Anne, an attractive young woman who has lost her job and is being pursued by Marc, a pimp Bob despises. Despite her advances, Bob resists Anne’s charms and instead introduces her to Paolo, his young protégé who ultimately becomes intimate with her. Through Jean, an ex-convict turned casino croupier at Deauville’s track, Roger – Bob’s safecracker friend – learns that the casino safe will hold a staggering 800 million French francs in cash by 5:00am on race day.

Due to Bob’s recent streak of misfortune, he has decided to commit a robbery. He successfully persuades a man named McKimmie to fund the operation and assembles a team for the job. Jean obtains precise blueprints of the casino and the safe, using some of his earnings to purchase a bracelet for his wife, Suzanne. Meanwhile, Paolo, who is infatuated with Anne, boasts about their upcoming heist in an attempt to impress her. Unaware of the gravity of the situation, Anne accidentally reveals this information to Marc before they engage in intimacy. Earlier on, Marc had been detained by Ledru for assaulting one of his prostitutes; however, Ledru agreed to release him under the condition that he provides intel on a larger-scale crime.
