Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) is a biographical drama film that follows the story of Freddie Mercury – the legendary lead singer of British rock band Queen. Spanning from 1970 when the band was formed, to their iconic 1985 Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium, the film captures Mercury’s journey and struggles. As he waits to take the stage at Live Aid in ’85, we see a flashback to his humble beginnings. In 1970, Farrokh Bulsara had a job as a baggage handler at Heathrow Airport and lived with his family. A chance encounter with the band Smile at a pub led him to meet Mary Austin – whom he was immediately attracted to. Despite encountering some obstacles, including Smile’s lead singer leaving for another band, Farrokh eventually joins Roger Taylor and Brian May as their new lead singer and impresses them with his impressive vocals. Meanwhile, his relationship with Mary blossoms as they start dating. The band begins performing across Britain with Farrokh as their frontman and new bassist John Deacon joining their lineup.
Farrokh, determined to make a big impact, puts forth the idea of selling their van in order to fund their record album. The talented engineer Roy Thomas Baker is approached by an A&R rep from EMI, requesting demos from the band. With a new name and a new label (Queen and John Reid, respectively), they set out on an American tour. Freddie’s schedule is now managed by Paul Prenter, who is drawn to him romantically. It isn’t long before Queen secures their first hit, ‘Killer Queen’, after making an appearance on Top of the Pops. During this time, Freddie becomes engaged to Mary but also begins to question his own sexual identity. In 1975, the band puts extensive effort into recording Freddie’s masterpiece, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, for their fourth studio album A Night at the Opera. However, after facing rejection from EMI executive Ray Foster for releasing it as the lead single, Freddie takes matters into his own hands and conspires with radio DJ Kenny Everett to premiere the song on his program instead.
