Boiler Room (2000)
Boiler Room (2000) is an American crime drama film written and directed by Ben Younger. In the late 90s, Seth Davis, a 19-year-old Queens College dropout, runs an unlicensed casino in his home near campus, catering to fellow students. Despite his successful career, he is viewed as a disappointment by his father Marty, a New York City federal judge. One evening, Seth’s cousin Adam brings wealthy associate Greg Weinstein to the casino to play blackjack. Impressed by Seth’s skills, Greg offers him a job at J.T. Marlin, a brokerage firm located off the Long Island Expressway with the promise of getting rich quick. At J.T. Marlin’s group interview, co-founder Jim Young outlines their expectations and assures new applicants that they can become millionaires within three years of starting employment.
The company’s sales techniques involve cold calling potential investors to sell stock. Seth joins as a trainee stockbroker and must close 40 accounts and pass the Series 7 Exam in order to work independently. Many of the brokers look up to Gordon Gekko from Wall Street and see him as a role model. Quickly, he becomes successful, earns his father’s approval, and begins a relationship with Abbie Halpert – Greg’s former girlfriend who also works as a secretary at the firm. Gradually, he discovers that J.T Marlin operates as a chop shop brokerage firm, using its brokers to artificially inflate demand for expired or fake companies and speculative penny stocks. Once their scheme is complete, the firm’s founders cash in by trading for legitimate stocks and raking in record profits.
