Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Bone Tomahawk (2015) is a Western movie written and directed by S. Craig Zahler in his directorial debut. Set in the 1890s, outlaws Purvis and Buddy come across a Native American burial ground. While escaping an ambush, Buddy is killed and Purvis manages to reach the nearby town of Bright Hope. He hides his stolen goods and is caught by Deputy Chicory. Sheriff Franklin Hunt shoots Purvis, who calls himself Buddy, in the leg when he tries to run away. The sheriff then sends skilled gunslinger John Brooder to get the town’s doctor, but instead Brooder finds Samantha O’Dwyer, the doctor’s daughter and assistant who is tending to her wounded husband Arthur. Meanwhile, Samantha stays at the sheriff’s office with another deputy named Nick to care for Purvis’ injury. That same night, a stable boy nearby is found dead.
Upon hearing of the murder, Hunt heads to his office where he discovers an empty space and a lone arrow. The Professor, a knowledgeable Native American, points out that the arrow belongs to a tribe known as ‘Troglodytes’ and marks their location on a map. He warns Hunt that this particular group is made up of inbred cannibals who are rejected by other native tribes. Convinced that Samantha, Nick, and Purvis have been taken captive by them, Hunt teams up with Chicory and Brooder to mount a rescue mission. Despite being injured, Arthur insists on joining them in search of his wife. After several days of travel, two unfamiliar travelers stumble upon the group’s campsite and are swiftly killed by Brooder out of fear that they may be scouts for an impending attack.
