The film Bonjour Tristesse (1958) is a Technicolor movie in CinemaScope, directed and produced by Otto Preminger. Cécile, a wealthy and unconventional young woman, shares a close bond with her playboy father Raymond. However, she finds herself uninterested in potential suitors and their activities. As she dances to the titular song, she reflects on the events of the previous summer on the French Riviera, wondering if she will ever be happy again. The story then unfolds through flashbacks as Cécile and Raymond holiday on the Riviera with his current mistress Elsa, a shallow and superficial woman. During their vacation, Cécile encounters Philippe, an enigmatic and attractive law student whom she quickly becomes fond of.
One evening, Raymond receives a letter from Anne – an older woman and dress designer who was a close friend of his late wife. She will be staying at the villa. Despite initially bonding with Anne, Cécile soon feels threatened by her attempts to reform their carefree lifestyle. Though he promised to be faithful to Anne, Raymond struggles to give up his playboy ways. With the help of Elsa, his young and flighty mistress, Cécile tries to sabotage the relationship. Unfortunately, the combination of Cécile’s contempt and Raymond’s philandering leads to a tragic fate for Anne.
