Borat (2006) is a mockumentary black comedy film directed by Larry Charles and starring Sacha Baron Cohen. Commissioned by the Kazakh Ministry of Information, Borat Sagdiyev sets off to the ‘US and A’, proclaimed as the ‘Greatest Country in the World’, to create a documentary on American customs and lifestyle. He leaves his wife, Oksana, behind, accompanied by his producer Azamat Bagatov and a pet hen. While in New York City, Borat becomes smitten with Pamela Anderson’s character on Baywatch after catching an episode on TV. Through interviewing and ridiculing a panel of feminists, he learns her name and residence in California. However, soon after receiving news of Oksana’s supposed death by bear attack via telegram, Borat is overjoyed and decides to make Anderson his new spouse. Facing Azamat’s fear of flying due to 9/11 (which he believes was orchestrated by Jews), they opt to travel by car instead. To prepare for this journey, Borat takes an ice-cream truck driving lesson and purchases a rundown vehicle for their trip.
During his travels, Borat obtains a Baywatch booklet and continues to capture footage for his documentary. Along the way, he encounters participants of a gay pride parade, as well as political figures Alan Keyes and Bob Barr, and African-American youths. On a local television station, Borat is even interviewed before causing chaos during the weather report. The next stop on the journey is a rodeo, where Borat entertains the audience with nationalistic remarks before surprising them with a fictional Kazakhstani anthem sung to the tune of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. However, this performance does not go over well and receives negative reactions. In Atlanta, Borat manages to secure lodging at a hotel until he offends the front desk worker by mimicking the speech and dress of the African-American youths he met earlier. After being evicted from the hotel, Borat finds himself staying at a bed-and-breakfast where he discovers that his hosts are Jewish. To make matters worse, he and Azamat panic and throw money at two woodlice they believe are their transformed hosts in order to escape.
