Bottle Rocket (1996), an American crime comedy film, marked Wes Anderson’s directorial debut. In Arizona, Dignan rescues his exhausted friend Anthony from a voluntary psychiatric unit. With an elaborate escape plan and a detailed 75-year strategy in hand, Dignan shares his ambitions with Anthony. They aim to pull off multiple heists and rendezvous with Mr. Henry, a landscape artist and part-time criminal known to Dignan. For their first trial run, they break into Anthony’s family home and steal pre-determined items from a list they agreed upon earlier. During the post-heist evaluation, Dignan casually confesses to taking a pair of earrings that were not on the list. This revelation upsets Anthony, who had bought them as a gift for his mother and purposely left them out of the plan. To rectify the situation, Anthony visits his younger sister at her school and asks for her help in returning the earrings.

Dignan enlists Bob Mapplethorpe as their getaway driver due to his possession of a car. After purchasing a firearm, they head back to Bob’s residence to strategize for their next target – a nearby bookstore. While Dignan struggles to articulate his elaborate scheme, the group exchanges heated words. Once inside the bookstore, they abscond with a meager amount of cash and hit the road, eventually stopping at a motel. At the establishment, Anthony meets Inez, a maid who captures his heart despite their language barrier (Inez speaks minimal English, while Anthony knows little Spanish). Meanwhile, Bob receives alarming news that his marijuana harvest has been found by authorities and his brother is now in custody. He departs the following day in his car to assist his sibling, without informing Dignan.
