Boundin’ (2003) is an American computer-animated short film that was screened in theaters prior to the feature-length superhero flick, The Incredibles. It tells the tale of a lamb whose confidence is shattered after being sheared, through music and narration by Pixar animator Bud Luckey. Notably, this was also the first Pixar short to feature vocal performances with words, such as Bobby McFerrin’s acapella piece for Knick Knack. Previously, only music and sound effects were used in their films.

In the American North, a lamb’s elegant dancing is popular with the other animals. However, when lamb-shearers arrive one day and shear him for wool, he becomes shy and loses his confidence to dance. The other animals mock his new skinny and bare appearance, causing the lamb to mourn. Fortunately, a benevolent jackalope comes across him and teaches him the importance of ‘bounding’ in addition to dancing – that is, getting up whenever he falls down. The lamb’s joy in life is restored as he embraces this new skill. Even when his wool grows back in the winter only to be cut again by the shearers, the lamb’s confidence remains unshaken and he continues to bound with joy.
