Bowfinger (1999)
Bowfinger (1999) is an American satirical buddy comedy film, helmed by director Frank Oz. B movie maker Bobby Bowfinger has been collecting funds to direct his dream project since childhood: with $2,184 in hand, he is finally ready to cover the production expenses. A script (‘Chubby Rain’) written by an accountant, Afrim, and access to studio equipment through his camera operator Dave’s job as a gofer complete Bowfinger’s team. To fill the remaining gaps, Bowfinger enlists the help of actors in need of work and a group of undocumented Mexican immigrants to serve as his camera crew. All that is left for him to do is secure a studio deal for distribution of his masterpiece.
After securing a promise from top Universal Pictures executive Jerry Renfro that the studio would distribute their film on one condition – the inclusion of currently popular action star Kit Ramsey – Bowfinger is faced with a roadblock. Ramsey, known for his pompous, neurotic, and paranoid behavior, refuses to participate in the project. Not one to back down easily, Bowfinger devises a plan to secretly film Ramsey’s scenes without his knowledge. The other actors are instructed to approach Ramsey in public and recite their lines while hidden cameras capture his confused reactions, under the guise that Ramsey is method acting and will not be interacting with them outside of filming.
