Brandon tries to deceive her by claiming to be intersex and awaiting gender confirmation surgery, but Lana interrupts with a declaration of her love for him regardless of his gender. However, during Brandon’s time in jail, Candace finds documents with his birth name, causing her and their friends to react with shock and disgust. They enter his room, search through his belongings, and come across transgender literature that confirms their suspicions. Upon Brandon and Lana’s return, Tom and John aggressively confront him and take him to the bathroom where they force him to expose himself.
