Boys Don’t Cry (1999) is an American biographical film directed by Kimberly Peirce, and co-written by Peirce and Andy Bienen. The movie follows the story of Brandon Teena, a young transgender man, who faces numerous challenges due to his identity. After being discovered as transgender by a former girlfriend’s brother, Brandon receives death threats and is forced to leave his cousin’s trailer in Falls City, Nebraska. He befriends ex-convicts John Lotter and Tom Nissen, along with their friends Candace and Lana Tisdel. As their relationship grows, Brandon and Lana make plans to move to Memphis where he can help manage her singing career. On one of their date nights, they share a kiss which leads to them becoming intimate with each other.

The police detain Brandon on previous charges before relocating him, and he is placed in the women’s section of Falls City jail. Lana bails him out and asks why he was held in a women’s facility. Brandon tries to deceive her by claiming to be intersex and awaiting gender confirmation surgery, but Lana interrupts with a declaration of her love for him regardless of his gender. However, during Brandon’s time in jail, Candace finds documents with his birth name, causing her and their friends to react with shock and disgust. They enter his room, search through his belongings, and come across transgender literature that confirms their suspicions. Upon Brandon and Lana’s return, Tom and John aggressively confront him and take him to the bathroom where they force him to expose himself.
