Brave (2012)
Pixar Animation Studios produced Brave (2012), an American animated fantasy film distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Set in Medieval Scotland, the story follows a young Princess Merida of clan Dunbroch on her birthday. As a gift, her father King Fergus gives her a bow and arrow, much to the dismay of Queen Elinor. While retrieving an arrow in the forest, Merida comes across a will-o’-the-wisp before being attacked by Mor’du, a massive demon bear. Escaping on horseback with Elinor, they leave Fergus and his men to defend against Mor’du, resulting in the loss of one of Fergus’s legs. A decade later, Merida learns she is to be betrothed to the son of one of her father’s allies. Elinor reminds Merida that rejecting this proposal could harm Dunbroch and references the legend of a prince who destroyed his kingdom due to pride and disobedience towards his father’s wishes.
Allied clan chieftains and their first-born sons gather to compete in the Highland games for Merida’s hand in marriage. However, Merida decides to join in as well, being the firstborn of her own clan. She easily outshines her suitors in an archery contest, then has a heated exchange with Elinor before fleeing into the forest. There, she comes across a group of wisps who lead her to an elderly witch’s hut. In exchange for a spell to change Elinor, Merida offers the witch an enchanted cake. Upon consuming it, Elinor is transformed into a bear with remnants of her human mind intact. Returning to the deserted cottage, Merida discovers a note from the witch stating that she must mend their bond by the second sunrise or the spell will be permanent. With guidance from wisps, they travel to ancient ruins where they encounter Mor’du. Realizing he was once a prince and vowing not to let the same fate befall her mother, Merida sets out to repair the family tapestry she had deliberately damaged during their argument.
